Lithium-ion cell recycling technology using hydrometallurgy methods

To solve environmental problems caused by the accumulation of used lithium-ion batteries, the state scientific institution “the Physical-Technical Institute of the National Academy of Sciences” is developing a technology using hydrometallurgy methods. It enables a high degree of extraction of recyclable materials (at least 90%) from recycled lithium-ion batteries.

Recycling of this type of batteries begins with the sorting of waste batteries by type.
After testing for no voltage, the battery is cut for further safe mechanical disassembly.

Further stages of laboratory processing technology include:

▪ component separarion (aluminum, copper, iron, plastic, electrode materials)

▪ extraction of lithium carbonate, cobalt and nickel powders, manganese oxide from electrode materials;

▪ analysis of the composition and concentration of converted intermediate products and extracted substances, necessary for adjustment of hydrometallurgical processes.

We will be glad to cooperation and joint projects to meet the following objectives:

▪ scaling the technology to industrial level;

▪ increasing the degree of automation of individual technological stages;

▪ building a concept for creating lithium-ion batteries recycling enterprise.
